Greetings from Boksburg where we are
suffering the early onset of winter! The wind as ever adds an Arctic
flavour.
Following last year’s 70th celebrations
this year seems to be almost mundane, but there is plenty to keep us
occupied.
The Old Boys’ Reunion Dinner last
November proved to be a huge success. A gentle reminder that it is on a
first-come-first-served basis, as many were disappointed last year when
they booked too late. This year’s dinner will be on Friday 10
November. Bookings are now open and will close on Tuesday 7
November—contact Helen Maree in the office (details above).
Our matric results were the best in
years, and for the second year running we had a matriculant in the Top
50 nationally in the Independent Examination Board finals. Academic
success does not come by chance, it is the culmination of many years’
effort from the baby school up, and I am proud to say we are blessed
with a dedicated and very capable staff.
On the cultural front, the resurrection
of the Pipe Band continues with great gusto and we have teamed up with
Jeppe Boys to compete until our band is strong enough to compete on its
own. By all accounts this should happen next year. Many thanks to Old
Boys Gerard Knobel, Grant Cooper and Sean Maher who have all given of
their time to the band.
We also have a school band that plays for
assemblies and Mass, and a marimba band.
Winter means rugby and hockey, and both
have started with very positive results. Our first XV and XI are
proving to be amongst our best sides in recent years under Old Boys Mike
Moriarty and Colin Douglas respectively.
We continue to face the predicament of
playing the big Boys’ Schools with their much larger numbers and often
equally large first team budgets. We may have to make a strategic
change in who we play with the consequent loss of some traditional
fixtures.
School sport continues the unabated rush
toward professionalism with the sad loss of much of the values of the
past.
Our second phase campus development is in
the final planning stages. This will see a new Pavilion, an Astro-Turf
for Hockey, an indoor Cricket training facility, a Gym and a Swimming
Pool. This will bring our facilities up to date and will be a huge
asset to our College Sport. The project is costing in the region of
R13.5 million, so all Old Boy donations will be gratefully received!
