HIGH SCHOOL – Mrs Pat Fitzsimons

Lance Armstrong tells us “winning is about heart, not just the legs. It’s got to be in the right place”.  This past term, for each of us, has brought its ups and downs, its successes and failures, but in the overall scheme of things I believe that every person involved in any activity at C.B.C. is a winner.  Many people will be recognised in this news letter because of their achievements or commitment. This is excellent and I congratulate and thank them all.  What makes our College so special however is that all of our students and their teachers are continually showing that not only is their commitment and effort exceptional but also that their hearts are in the right place.

ACADEMICS

The boys will be receiving their reports with this newsletter.  Well done to you all and I hope your results match your efforts and expectations. Parents’ evenings will be held next term to discuss any issues arising out of these reports. There will also be meetings with regard to subject choices for Year 9 into Year 10.  Congratulations to the following boys who have been awarded Academic Badges or Quills.

MATRICS

To these young men who tonight attend their Matric Farewell Function, enjoy your evening but be sensible and be safe. This is one of the special times in your matric year, it is not however the most important.  Once this is over it is time to put your effort, heart and soul into preparing for your Prelim exams and eventually your finals.  This holiday is a time for work, use the time wisely.

YEAR 11

To all those boys and parents who put such effort into making sure that tonight’s’ Matric Farwell can be the special occasion it should be, I thank you. Special thanks to Mrs.Ruthven and Ms Dolman for giving so much of their time in fund raising and the organization of the students and to Mrs Stoop for making sure our events, contracts and finances have been properly handled.

SPORT

To all coaches and boys thank you for your wonderful effort this term. I know that the squash sides are continuing to play fixtures during the holidays, some boys are taking part in the Coke Rugby series and that our tennis sides are taking part in a tournament at Sun City.  Thank you to all the boys who are giving up at least part or their holiday to play for these various teams and thank you to Mr Harvey, Mr Maree and Mr Rindfleisch their respective coaches.   Remember that cricket season starts next term and that on a Wednesday the study hall periods will be for the A and B sides while the C, D and E sides are at sport. A and B sides then go to sport from 3.00 pm.

CULTURAL

Well done to our boys who play the Marimbas. They took part in a competition this past weekend and did very well. Thank you to Mrs.Luiz who coaches these young men.  The Pipe Band has also had a very busy and successful term.  Our thanks go to Mr Askham and his tutors for all the time they give to their students.

The winners of the House Cultural evening are as follows—

1st—Edmund

2nd—Revill

3rd—Aquinas

4th—Founders

EDMUND RICE SOCIETY

These young men continue their efforts for the poor. We hope that as our matric boys move into their exams, finish their year and leave school, the younger boys will take over and keep the society strong.

MASSES AND LITURGY

These are very special occasions in our term and the Liturgy held today was no exception. To Mr. Flood and his team who organises these special moments for us, we thank you.  In this world where everything is so rushed and where we are so focused on the material aspects of our lives it takes these very special people to help us come back to what is really important.

THE HOUSES

Thank you to the House Masters and their Matric leaders for continuing to promote and grow the house system within the College.  Many boys have contributed to their house this term, through efforts in academics, on the sports field, at cultural events and by their attendance in support of each other.  The points attained for each House are as follows—Aquinas 4156 points;  Edmund 4012;  Revill 3788 and Founders 3703.  Therefore congratulations to Aquinas,  the winning House.

HOUSE REPORTS

Founders  (Mr Muller)

Everything has now come to an end, and everybody is looking forward to a well deserved break.  Even if you are not going away, you don’t have to get up as early as usual to get the boys to school.  Parents can save time in the morning because they don’t have to drag their kids out of bed.  Even traffic is a little more bearable.

Congratulations to all boys who are satisfied with their reports.  You have worked hard, so enjoy your rest.  Matrics, you can only have a short rest because the rest of the time you must prepare for the prelims and the final exams.  Remember, the schedule that Mrs Ruthven gave you is the minimum amount of work you have to do.  I will pray to God that He blesses everyone during these holidays and keeps us all safe.  See you next term!

Aquinas  (Mr Rindfleisch)

I’m sure that all are quite pleased that exams are over.  In most cases the boys have good reason to be satisfied with their marks after a hard term’s work.  Those who are disappointed need to do some soul-searching to find out just where they went wrong and decide how they intend to fix the problem.  Revision work over the August holidays may even be necessary in some cases.  Matrics have their Farewell on Friday.  I wish them an enjoyable and memorable evening.  It is also important for them to realise that the August holiday is more of a study break for prelims.  Good luck with the studies.  Inter-House Indoor Cricket takes place at the beginning of next term.  A reminder to the boys in the Under 15 team to be prepared to play in the first week of term.  The senior team will play in the second week.  Enjoy the break.

Edmund  (Mr Barnett)

Firstly I must wish the matrics an enjoyable Farewell Function tonight and a sensible after party.  Please return home safely.  Also to the matrics, you must use the holiday to prepare for the prelims—don’t forget the Winter School .  When we return on 2 September the Under 15s begin with their Inter-House Indoor Cricket competition—please be prepared.  Thank you to the Edmund Tutors and the Head of House for their support over this past term.  Enjoy the month off—relax and recharge your batteries.

Revill  (Mr Phiri)

We have finally come to the end of yet another busy and exciting term.  A lot of hard work has gone into many activities that took place in the end, and I commend all the boys and tutors for their enthusiastic contributions.  For the matrics, the count down is on—obviously below 40 days.  My message to them is that this is the time to hit the road hard as they edge towards the finish line.  The rest of the school will collect their reports today and it is imperative to look at these marks objectively.  Well done to all boys who have achieved their goals in the various learning areas.  Those that have not should set about mapping their strategies for the next term.  Finally, all the best to the matrics for their Matric Dance tonight.  May they have a ball!   Enjoy the holidays and I pray that you all come back safely next term.  I would like to share a joke with you—

A high school boy came home from school seeming rather depressed.

“What’s the matter, son?” asked his mother.

“Aw gee,” said the boy, “it’s my marks—they’re all wet”.

“What do you mean, all wet?”

“I mean,” he replied, “below C-level”.

PIPE BAND  (Mr N. Askham)

Another season has come and gone, though it almost seems impossible.  An enormous amount of time and effort has gone into what has been a most successful and enjoyable season.  Our combined CBC, Boksburg / Jeppe Pipe Band competed in no less than eight Gatherings this year.  I’m sure that all who have heard and seen them perform will attest to how incredible they truly are!  The growth and improvement over the past few months has been phenomenal!  Individuals have blossomed in their art and so, as a natural outcome, the band too has flourished.  Last Saturday, our boys & girls competed in the SA championships held at Benoni High School and obtained a 3rd place in the Novice Juvenile Category.  This band has become such an asset to our respective schools and we all ought to be very proud of them.  Congratulations to all involved!

We are so fortunate to have an outstanding group of tutors driving the effort and taking our band to greater and greater heights.  Without these gentlemen, we would truly be nowhere.  And so, I salute our four tutors and thank them most sincerely for their passion, energy and drive.  They are Mr. Francois Badenhorst, Mr. Vic Butterworth, Mr. Matthew Keyzer and Mr. Sean Maher.  Our sincere thanks and appreciation extend to them.

The band can be seen in action from 10h00 at the Boksburg Mardi Gras to be held at the Boksburg Stadium on Saturday, 9th August.  Hope to see you all there!

PRIMARY SCHOOL – Mr Henry Moolman

The end of term is finally upon us.  Many lads are counting the sleeps to the final bell.   I have a suspicion that staff are doing the same!  In retrospect it has been an encouraging and rewarding term.  There have been the odd disappointments and challenges, but these have been few compared to the many blessings received and noticeable overall growth which has occurred in our boys.  This is due in no small measure to the support of our parents, a dedicated staff and as mentioned God’s enabling and grace.  We indeed have much to be grateful and thankful for.  The Entrepreneurs’ Day was a delight.  Thank you to all our Year Two parents and boys for the varied, creative and colourful event.  Thank you to Mrs Kassel and the Year Two teachers for their input and hard work.    I was very pleased that we were able to arrange a football match for the Under Seven and Eight boys.  My appreciation to the moms who assisted with transport and to Mr Maree who arranged the matches.  Our Under Nine side that attended the Bloemfontein Football  Tournament had a busy and rewarding time.  They were also complimented by the owner of the guest house where they stayed on their good behaviour and manners.  Well done, lads, we are all proud of you.  Thank you to Mr Maree and Coach Tshepo for spending this weekend with the team.    May you all enjoy a well earned rest.  Travel safely should you be going away and for those who are not, may you have an equally rejuvenating time.
